LYneer Staffing Solutions is seeking a Histology Specimen Processing Specialist for New York, NY.

The Medical Lab Assistant is responsible for the accurate set-up of specimens and the timely submission of completed cases into the correct laboratory department. This includes labeling test slides and controls from requisitions/worksheets and requests from pathologists and inter-laboratory departments. Additional duties are providing various clerical support.

Medical Lab Assistant job duties:

  • Re-accessions all incoming cases based on clinical indications or test requisition forms to ensure their proper setup; i.e. reviewing test requests and adding correct or deleting incorrect procedure codes.
  • Batching of cases to Histology from accessioning; having knowledge of time frames for different technologies throughout the labs.
  • The ability to identify types of specimens and the knowledge to verify if the specimen is acceptable or enough for processing within the different technologies in the lab- (i.e. Slides-unstained, stained, smears).
  • Verification that specimen(s) match the requisition and all other pertinent paperwork.
  • Identifies/Documents problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either corrects the problem or immediately notifies a Director/Manager, Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor or Lead.
  • Responsible for color coding and labeling specimens received from accessioning.
  • Submits cases for SME (Pathologist) review.
  • Identifies scant/small tissue specimens and scans specimen in LIS system.
  • Set up diagnostic and prognostic paraffin block specimens with slides and controls.
  • Ability to identify antibody markers, correct placement of tissue on paraffin controls slides and proper labeling of approved control slides for distribution into the lab.
  • Ability to identify and communicate Quality Codes for paraffin block re-embed or scant tissue blocks to client service for resolution
  • Proper labeling of slides and QC'ing cases through to the immunohistochemistry lab.
  • Identifying Bone Marrow Morphology core and clot paraffin blocks and using LIS system to assign testing to correct specimen.
  • Identifying cases that require Tissue Transfer Techniques (Diatex)
  • Setting up and processing of Supplemental Pink testing requests from the pathologists.
  • Detail setup of DNA testing to include adding correct panels, printing DNA cassettes and attaching DNA Biopsy bags.

Medical Lab Requirements:

  • Associate in Science Degree, including Biology and Chemistry courses
  • One to three years of histology/pathology or medical laboratory experience preferred.
