Job Description

MACHINE & EQUIPMENT: Single and multiple spindle automatic and semi-automatic screw machines; Acme-Gridley (DBK), Browne & Sharpe, Conematic, Davenport, Shutte, Wickman

TOOLS: Form, face, shave, recess and turning tools. Stamps, drills, reamers, boring bars, knurles, broaches, burnishing rolls and personal hand and measuring tools as required

MATERIALS: Any machine-able material such as carbon, alloy and stainless steel, high temperature alloys, titanium, multiphase, etc

WORK GUIDES & INSTRUCTIONS: Method sheets, work drawings, standard book, tool layouts, sketches, verbal instructions

TOLERANCES & FINISHES: Tolerances exacting but not difficult to hold; may occasionally be assigned closer tolerance work

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Setup and operate one or more of the above machines but normally specialize in one type. Perform ordinary setups and operations following standard methods and procedures. Setup standard, repetitive type jobs requiring exacting tolerances, but are not usually difficult to hold. Perform a variety of first and second operation operations from bar stock or hand feed. Setup and maintain multiple machine combinations as required. Use specified speeds, feeds, cams and tooling or select within limits. Remove, resharpen or replace and reset tools. Obtain necessary gauges and check and gauge all work. Load bar stock to racks. Assist others and obtain assistance as required. Complete pan tags and production reporting forms.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES: Maintain work areas in a clean, safe and orderly condition. Adhere to established safety regulations within the department assigned. Perform other duties as necessary or appropriate to the position.


PRE-REQUISITES: The incumbent must have the ability to perform all essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations. Must have demonstrated proficiency in skills and essential functions required for a Screw Machine Operator position and presently operate or have ability to operate listed machines and equipment with routine training and follow written and verbal instructions.


General communication skills such as reading pan tags, reporting production data and receiving job instructions and procedures

Arithmetic such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, including decimals and fractions, simple use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings, specifications and schedules

Fixed gauges and direct reading instruments and devices in which interpretation is not required (e.g. borescope, gauge blocks, go/no-go gauges, plug gauges, ring gauges, scale (6" or 12"), scale (weight), snap gauges)

Diversified operation requiring constant alertness or activity

Uses judgment to plan or perform work within limitations of standard methods and procedures

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Frequent lifting and handling light weight parts and occasionally lifting heavy bars, racks and pans
